Earlier Heaven directions: keep them distinct from Later Heaven

The usual Earlier Heaven arrangement is associated with the diagram tradition transmitted by Shao Yong in the Song dynasty, and is also called the Fuxi arrangement. This does not establish that a surviving diagram was personally created by the ancient Fuxi.

Its directions are: Qian—south; Kun—north; Li—east; Kan—west; Dui—southeast; Zhen—northeast; Xun—southwest; Gen—northwest. It emphasises opposing pairs such as Qian and Kun or Kan and Li, and is a different directional scheme from Later Heaven.

Traditional diagrams often put south at the top and north at the bottom, whereas modern maps commonly put north at the top. Check the direction labels first; the left side of an image does not necessarily mean west.
