Incense safety: ventilation, supervision and sensitive people
Burning incense produces smoke, particles and gaseous pollutants. “Natural” does not mean harmless, and incense should not be claimed to purify indoor air or treat illness. Read ingredients, warnings and instructions. Provide ventilation, use a stable, heat-resistant, non-combustible holder, and keep it away from curtains, paper and other flammable materials.
Supervise it while lit. Do not leave it burning while asleep or away, and confirm that all embers are extinguished afterwards. Avoid small enclosed spaces and keep children and pets away from flames, hot ash and incense materials. People sensitive to smoke or with asthma or respiratory conditions should avoid exposure. Minimise unnecessary smoke around pregnant people, infants and young children. If coughing, chest tightness or discomfort occurs, stop use, leave the exposure area and seek medical care when needed.
