Gen ☶: two yin lines below yang; the image of a mountain
Gen is the trigram ☶. From bottom to top its lines are yin, yin, yang. The lower two lines are broken and the top line is solid. Its traditional image is a mountain, and its quality is often described as stillness or stopping.
In the usual Later Heaven arrangement, Gen is northeast. In the Earlier Heaven system transmitted by Shao Yong in the Song dynasty, it is northwest. “Stopping” can prompt reflection on pausing at the right time or respecting boundaries. Its meaning still depends on the text and situation; it does not simply mean all action should cease.
