The Chinese zodiac: twelve animals and year-marking customs
The usual twelve zodiac animals are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, corresponding in order to the twelve earthly branches. They appear widely in Lunar New Year decorations, commemorative gifts and folk stories.
Everyday custom often changes the zodiac year at Lunar New Year, while some divination traditions change the year pillar at Start of Spring (Lichun). These may differ for dates near the boundary, so state the rule before identifying a particular sign. A zodiac sign alone cannot determine personality, marital compatibility or a year’s success. Regions and cultures may also use different animals or stories; learn the recipient’s customs before choosing a gift.
